The Santa Run Silicon Valley is produced by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group Foundation (SVLGF) which provides the non-profit programming for the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

The Silicon Valley Leadership Group, founded in 1978 by David Packard of Hewlett-Packard, represents more than 375 of Silicon Valley’s most respected employers on issues, programs and campaigns that affect the economic health and quality of life in Silicon Valley, including energy, transportation, education, housing, health care, tax policies, economic vitality and the environment. Leadership Group members collectively provide nearly one of every four private sector jobs in Silicon Valley.

Over the past years, municipal funding for Christmas in the Park and Downtown Ice were eliminated. A call out to the SVLGF was made and the Santa Run Silicon Valley was born to raise funds for these two cherished holiday programs.  The Santa Run Silicon Valley provides valuable monetary contributions to the programs so they can be experienced by future generations.

CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK

Christmas in the Park is an annual holiday tradition that takes place in the heart of Downtown San José. For over 30 years, this whimsical event has brought people from all over the Bay Area together during the holidays. Guests enter a winter wonderland of lights, songs and local entertainment while strolling through an enchanted forest of trees decorated by San José schools, community groups and businesses.

Over 60 musical and animated exhibits, glittering lights and the 60-foot Community Giving Tree along with Santa’s Photo Den make this event like no other. Admission is free and so are pictures with Santa!

Christmas in the Park is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is supported through fundraising efforts, which include sponsorships, grants and personal donations. The City of San José is an in-kind sponsor and works closely with staff and the volunteer Board of Directors in providing services. It takes more than 260,000 volunteer hours from Board Members and the community to bring this well-loved holiday tradition to San José each year.

DOWNTOWN ICE

Downtown Ice is a  Silicon Valley holiday tradition that features a centrally located and festively decorated ice rink that people of all ages can enjoy.

Olympic Gold Medalist figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, her Always Dream Foundation and Hawaiian Airlines also return for the seventh year to promote the family-oriented event.

“I am humbled and honored to be associated with this iconic rink,” said Kristi Yamaguchi, Olympic figure skating gold medal winner, at Downtown Ice skating rink’s 2011-12 opening ceremony. “This location is wonderful and so family-friendly with all the museums and holiday activities nearby. I really enjoyed Christmas in the Park as a child, and now it’s so nice to skate among the tall buildings.”

The circular rink is nestled between the Fairmont Hotel and the San Jose Museum of Art. It is just across the street from Christmas in the Park. The lighting effect of twinkling lights wrapped around the palms, spotlights bouncing off the milky ice and stars overhead create an unforgettable skating experience.

An expected 50,000 skaters and thousands more spectators will visit the rink as part of their holiday celebrations in downtown San Jose.

For most of November and early December, the rink is generally open 5-9 PM weeknights, 5 PM – midnight on Friday, noon-midnight on Saturday and noon-10 PM Sunday. During the busiest time of the season, December 15 – January 1, the rink opens earlier in the day. Visit www.downtownicesj.com for more in more information.

The rink is produced by the San Jose Downtown Association, which represents business and property owners and works to enhance downtown’s vitality.
